You can stand under my umbrella

The little things.. you know. Funny things, strange things, weird things.

Firstly my mail is working, yay! I've already got loads mail.. though all of them are from my new bank Lloyds TBS. And guess what! They sent me a cheque book. Yes, I can carry it around and write cheques when ever I need. In reality I don't have the faintest idea how it works, but I got one now!

Welcome to the modern age of cheque books!

Unfortunately this is only in Finnish, but I have to put it here.. cause it's so true. It's a piece of stand-up called "England is developing country".

The taps are miles away from each other. And you can only have your hands burning or freezing when you wash them. How nice.

In public toilets the doors of the cubicles open only inside. Most of the times you have to wiggle yourself in a cubicle and try to avoid having to stand on the toilet seat to get the door closed. I don't even want to know how people bigger than me do it. The flushing of most the toilets is still mystery to me, cause usually I try to do it but nothing happens (in our flat we have quite normal "push that button" system - thank god!). And in 98% of public toilets there isn't hand drying paper, only air blowers. And no automatic taps. That would involve too much modern techniques.

Showers. You have two options: no water pressure at all or water pressure so high it almost rips your skin off your bones. In our flat we have the later. I'm still afraid of the shower. But at least we get the shampoo off our hairs. The flat next door don't have water pressure at all. So we're the lucky ones.

Queuing. Everywhere. All the time. What ever the occasion is, there's no reason why we shouldn't queue to get there. In best cases we have queued to get to the queue.

Queuing to registration

We were lucky ones - only 2,5 hours of queuing in total!

Trying to get the laundry dry after washing them. Still have no clue how to do it without using the dryer. My room has pretty subtropical atmosphere for two days when I'm doing my laundry. But at least my room is still warm. I might survive through the winter. Single glassed windows. Heating time twice a day. Leaking house. A prober winter with several days temperature bellow zero. What more do you need for hypothermia?

Funny german airer, but really handy! (Thanks Denise!)

My windows during laundry day + day after + on mornings after rainy nights

The traffic on the weird side of the street. And the weird street crossings. The dangerous crossing is the best example: nobody knows how it should be crossed. But there's more places like that. No zebra paintings on the ground. No traffic lights for pedestrians. No nothing. Only thing you can do is try to read vehicles traffic lights and try to read drivers' minds. And hope that you have quick feet or that the cars' have good brakes.

The odd focus points of being more environmentally friendly. Attempts to reduce the use of plastic bags and bottled water. Umm, here's a though: how bout recycling wastes? Wastes are divided to general waste and recycled waste. And then there's glasses. In recycled waste one put plastics, tins, cardboards, cans etc. In general waste you put all the rest. Like biowastes, papers, fabrics.

Dressing. Or more like the way girls dress. Or don't dress. Like the guy said in the orientation session in Jyväskylä I've never seen so much cleavage and bare legs in my life during these two weeks. Skirts (if a person has one) are so short they don't even cover their arses. Bras are regarded as a piece of clothing. But if one is wearing a lace dress there's no need for bras. And the shoes have to have at least 12 cm heels. It's no excuse to not to walk on heels if you don't know how to walk on heels. And jackets? What are those? It's totally okey to go and get back from the bar/pub wearing just a short dress, nothing else.

Two lovely ladies in a very typical british clothing

But hey, it's an island! What did you expect?!

But not a drop fell on little old me cause I was in shoo-shoo-shoo Sugar Town

Life in Sheffield is finally starting to normalize and calm down since Intro week is now over. Intro week held loads of official info's about the uni and studying in here. On thursday I had registration day and I finally got my U Card and became legit student at the University of Sheffield. I'm so glad I took part to the Orientation week cause during that week we got information about living and surviving in the country and in the city. More like unofficial info that totally lacked from Intro week's program.

Flat mates in our kitchen. In the upper picture from right Eliza, Marianne and Katrin and on the other Sonja and Denise.

Sheffield feels like more like home everyday and life in here is getting easier too. We held two flat meetings last weekend and managed to sort out everything we needed for our flat. During the week I've made shopping trips to different places and I start to have hunch about where to buy and what. We also found Aldi from the south side of the city and hence finally found food we can afford to eat. And Primark! There's no way to survive without Primark in here! :D

The entrance to the Botanical garden on my way to uni.

Broomhill, my hoods. And the Glossop Road the one I walk everyday.

Uni is officially starting on next week but my first half semester is going to be pretty laid back. I have only one module going on (Sustainable Agro-ecosystems) and it has four 50 minutes long lectures per week. Though I'm trying to get internship position from my department but nothing is certain yet. And then of course I have my thesis to write.

Little shops and pizza places along the way.

University's Drama studio, quite fancy one.

The dangerous crossing, nobody knows how to get to the other side safely..

Atm I feel really tired cause most of the nights during the week are spent out doing something, like hanging in a bar or bar crawling (we're trying to find cool places where most of us would like to be). And of course there are the bloody freshers' flus. Yes, that's a plural. I got the first one during the Orientation week and got rid off it around wednesday this week. Now on saturday I have one again. Bloody freshers! I bet someone sneezed on me last night at the Freshers' mania (The lamest party ever and the tickets were 15 pounds! Rip off!). Just like a totally random girl wanted to share a toilet cubicle with me. I don't always get these Brits.

At a tea party at Student Advice Centre: Melissa, Denise, Iris and me.

Some crazy people in the inner ward of Firth Hall. And yes, this was the best picture of the punch.

Cheers luvs!

Brush my teeth with bottle of Jack

Orientation week is well and truly behind and the freshers have taken over the village and campus. Our little international bubble has broken and we really need to start to survive on our own in the city, at the uni and union. No more lovely (and they were really lovely) orientation assistants to help you out. And top of everything I got the freshers' flu even before they got here, bloody freshers!

Orientation week started on monday but I arrived on sunday. So on sunday there wasn't loads of things happening. There was walks to the city centre, to botanical gardens, to Broomhill etc. I unbacked my stuff and took part to city center/uni walk. Sunday night went on with few drinks at Stephenson hall's bar. (Quite handy to have a bar in the building next your's!)

On the city walk on sunday.

On monday there was official registration and internet registration. All that took about 1,5 hours (mostly cause of the queuing) and the rest of the day was free. Me and some of the girls went to do some shopping in the city centre (got my duvet and pillow!). The night again included drinks at Stephenson hall's bar.

Inside doors lunch picnic

Memories about tuesday are bit lost. Not cause of the previous night but more cause there was so many info sessions and the tiredness took over. On the evening we had quiz night which was really interesting and I met new people. I'm really proud of myself know (guessing) that the other Sheffield's football team is called Sheffield Wednesday. After the quiz night I fooled Denise to go 24/7 shop with me while the others were preparing her surprise b-day party. We totally surprised her :D

Denise blowing her b-day cake's candles.

On wednesday morning there was more info sessions. Around noon we left for the Chatsworth house trip and it took the rest of the afternoon. Wednesday night was supposed to be early night in, but I went for a drink at the bar.

The first building of the university the Firth Court. Looks much nicer than Jyväskylä's uni buildings..

On thursday we had more info sessions. Me and Iris skipped some of those to go to the city center and fix our bank accounts. It was really quick and easy compared to what I've heard about opening a bank account in UK. There was also treasure trail hunt around the city but we skipped it and headed home to get ready for the night. We went to students union where we danced and drunk the night away till we walked home around 3 am. Cold, tired but very happy.

Part of the up route to Glossop road.

Friday started with information fair and fixing things. We girls got ourselves personal alarms (makes a quite nice noise) and gave feed back about orientation program. On the evening we had the Orientation dinner in the Octagon Centre. It was nice to meet new people, wine and dine in good company and dance to night away again. After the night in heels (and walking back home in heels) my feet were killing me. What could have been better way to end the orientation week?

The sun, it rises slowly as you walk

Yesterday we made a trip to Chatsworth house which is the seat of Duke of Devonshire. It's also the original house that Jane Austen based on the Pemberley, the estate of Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. The house is very beautiful and you feel like you've in a totally different time (I kinda felt like I should have worn some big and fancy dress yesterday). Attached to the house is massive garden and parklands. Here's some pics of the place, it was really worth of the visit tho the weather was shite.

From the garden

There was quite large maze in which I managed to get lost and found loads of dead ends before finding my way to centre of the maze.

I even tried to take a short cut but it was bit more difficult than I expected..

In the garden was sculpture exhibition going on. Some of the art pieces were really interesting.

I gotta feeling..

.. that this autumn is gonna be good good autumn!

So I packed my bags at home and literally had almost my weight of stuff. Yeah. About 40 kilos. And I didn't have to pay any extra :D But when I got to Stephenson (orientation week's main point thingy) I was dying under the weight of my packages.

Everything went really well and in the UK end everybody was very helpful. My tax driver came running and took my back bag from me and drove me to the front yard of Stephenson and then orientation assistants started to sort things for me.

Unlike I thought and had been informed I actually got my own permanent room already. I'm really lucky one cause most of people have to move again in the end of the week. I just unpacked and settled home. My flat building is really amazing one. All the grounds are very green and beautiful.

The view from my front door.

My backyard and my window is one of them.

Part of the Crewe flat.

My room is really nice. It's on the top floor and it's quite big and modern and nice. I have loads of space and my own (almost) walk-in-closet :D I've met five of my flat mates and I can say again that I'm one of the really lucky ones, they're all great! And my room is warm, really warm!

This far I've managed to get my internet working and I have mobile connection too. I've done loads of walking around the Endcliffe village (mostly just between Crewe and Stephenson) and I've hit the city central twice. The city is green and beautiful with hints of industrial feelings. Today did little shopping with girls from my flat (and next door flat) and got essential things like duvet and pillows and other stuff.

So.. everything is really good :)

My bags are packed I'm ready to go

Oh fuck this shit. Where all this stuff comes from? Why do I need it all?

I'm going to die under the weight of my belongings. My packback is about to burst, my Fifi is fat as granny's cat (for those who don't know it, Fifi is my trolley bag) and my had bag could be used to press plants.. or more like trees.

I've been running around the town whole week like crazy person. My memory is full of things I need to take care before I go. Yesterday I killed couple of trees when I printed out all the papers I need (150 pages - pretty impressive). Today I've been wrestling with my stuff to get it all inside of the bags. And writing lists about what I still need to fix. Kind of hoping I would have already left so I wouldn't need to do anything anymore. And could go with the flow.

Okey. All the big and important things are ready. Only small things left to do so I'm pretty good to go. In few hours I'll go to Munabileet (Egg/Dick Party) and then around midnight I'll come home, gather my stuff and I'll be off!

In fact.. could life get any better? :D

You can go to sleep now baby, I got the world outside

About a week till I go and I've kind of lost my feeling of leaving. I'm quite tired of taking care of things and making sure that everything is okey. I still annoying stuff ahead of me, like visit to the bank and insurance company. I need to go through my stuff again, exchange some money and print out papers worth of few poor trees.

But there's also fun things to do like doing the eggs, hints and problems for Munabileet (Egg/Dick Party). I'm really looking forward to that party, shame I have to leave there early to catch my flight. Though not bad reason to leave early from a party.. :D

And more nice things! I got very, very, VERY annoying gift box that I'm not allowed to open before I've arrived to Sheffield.

If one shakes it (*ahem*) it makes funny noises and it clearly contains few different things. Very mean thing to give for an impatient person. But it's still intact! :D
